Summary:

This project includes the design and construction of a new sanitary sewer interceptor connecting the City’s existing 159th Street and Cedar Lake lift stations to the Cedar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. It includes 5.6 miles of gravity sewer, 2.1 miles of sewer forcemain, and a new regional lift station on the south side of Lake Olathe. The improvements will also extend sanitary sewer service to areas along Old 56 Highway west of Robinson Drive and north of 135th Street that currently cannot be served.

Construction began in 2024 and the project remains on schedule to be operational by the end of 2026. To maintain the overall project budget during development of the original four Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) packages, several items were deferred from the construction scope. As the project approaches completion, the design team has completed its work within the original engineering budget, making existing design encumbrances available to restore selected deferred improvements. This action does not increase the overall project budget; it reallocates available engineering funds for construction.

GMP #5 totals $563,384 and will fund two previously deferred items:

Lining of all manholes between the 159th Street Lift Station and the new West Cedar Lift Station.

Demolition of the existing, unused lift station infrastructure at the 159th Street and Cedar Lake sites.

Manhole lining will provide long-term corrosion protection for a portion of the interceptor that will be difficult to access and maintain after construction. Removing the obsolete lift station facilities will eliminate ongoing maintenance responsibilities for infrastructure that will no longer serve a beneficial purpose.
