Summary:

Urban deer overpopulation can become a significant issue within municipal settings.  Overpopulation of deer may contribute to the potential for increased risk for deer-vehicle collisions, disease spread, and an imbalance within the ecosystem.  Hunting can be an effective tool in the management of deer populations within communities.  Important information regarding the program, such as participation requirements and municipal code conditions can be found on the Urban Deer Management tab located on the front page of the Animal Care & Control webpage.

The Urban Deer Management Program (codified in Olathe Municipal Code Section 9.14.110) allows the City Council to approve property for the harvesting of deer by bow and arrow.   A written report must be provided for each property from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) indicating the property owner has deer overpopulation and property damage caused by the deer.   All applicants must also meet all State and City of Olathe permitting requirements.

Two property owners have requested permission to harvest deer on their property for the upcoming 2026-2027 hunting season.  The applicants indicated they were participating in the program prior to the August 1st application deadline.  Maps showing the area for bow hunting and all supporting information has been attached for further review.
