Summary:

The draft 2024 Federal Legislative Priority statement provides policy level guidance for assessing and advocating for/against federal legislative initiatives.  It provides a “filter” for our delegation to apply when considering legislation or other federal activities to help ensure local impacts and local perspectives are a part of the decision-making process.  The draft agenda was based on specific city issues and needs identified by staff and trade relevant associations (police/fire/public works, etc.) as well as the legislative agendas from organizations such as MARC and the National League of Cities.  This year’s draft does not significantly differ from the 2023 approved agenda.  It provides updated information about our efforts to implement the Lead Copper Rule, progress on the I-35/Santa Fe Interchange Project and introduces potential projects that may require federal partnerships.  In addition, we use this agenda to remind the delegation that the City traditionally only engages on federal issues having direct impact on City operations and service.  Accordingly, we remind the delegation that local decisions should be left to local leaders and voters.  Central to the draft statement is maintaining our Delegation’s continued assistance in securing/returning federal funding to key local projects such as the Santa Fe/I-35 expansion.  This project not only addresses safety and traffic flow on Santa Fe and I-35, but also creates opportunities for economic development and job creation as that area redevelops.
