Summary:

Variety KC is partnering with the City of Olathe to develop a high-quality, inclusive playground at Two Trails Park that will serve children and families of all abilities throughout Greater Kansas City.

The project is part of Variety KC’s Ten Parks Project, an initiative to create a regional network of large, destination-level inclusive play spaces informed by individuals with disabilities and their families. Funded through a $30 million grant from the Mallouk Family Foundation, the initiative will support construction of inclusive parks in 10 municipalities across the metropolitan area.

The City of Olathe submitted an application for Ten Parks Project funding in June 2026. In August 2026, Variety KC notified staff that Two Trails Park had been selected to receive a $3 million grant.

Planned improvements include an accessible and inclusive playground with accessible routes, rubberized safety surfacing, interactive slide features, activity stations, and sensory-specific play areas. The project also includes restroom and drinking-water facilities, lighting, landscaping, and parking improvements. Modifications to the existing park shelter, benches, and tables may also be included. Construction is anticipated to be complete, with the park opening, in spring 2028.

Project funding is structured as an 80/20 partnership. Variety KC will fund up to $3 million, while the City will reimburse Variety KC for the local share of project costs, not to exceed $750,000. Staff requests Council approval to transfer $750,000 from the Park Sales Tax Fund to fund the City’s portion of the project.
