Summary:
This project will improve Santa Fe from Ridgeview Road to Mur-Len Road. Improvements will include a reconstructed interchange at I-35, new bridges, pavement widening/reconstruction, roadway realignments/extensions, access control, signal installation, median construction, streetlights, sidewalks, and all other work necessary to complete the project. As part of the project, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will add auxiliary lanes to I-35 from Santa Fe to 119th Street, pavement reconstruction along I-35 and widening of the Old 56 Bridge over I-35 to accommodate 2 lanes.
A Professional Services Agreement with HNTB Corporation (HNTB) was approved by City Council on June 4, 2019, that included traffic analysis, geometric evaluations, and public involvement for improvements to Santa Fe from Ridgeview to Mur-Len. In January 2021, options developed by HNTB to improve the Santa Fe corridor and interchange were presented to Council and in March 2021, a Supplemental Agreement was approved by Council and included preliminary engineering, completion of the environmental process, a detailed analysis of costs associated with the project, and all other items needed to place the city in a position to compete for federal funding for the project. In September 2023, City Council approved Supplemental Agreement No. 2 with HNTB which included moving the project to the field check (60% design) level, identifying right-of-way needs, beginning utility coordination and continued coordination with KDOT and FHWA. In August 2024, City Council approved Supplemental Agreement No. 3 which included progression of design into the office check (90% design) level.
The Supplemental Agreement No. 4 with HNTB will allow the project to progress into final design. This agreement includes additional services related to right of way acquisition, utility relocations, additional submittal requested by KDOT, and additional structural design services. The total cost for Supplemental Agreement No. 4 is $1,880,920.
Utility relocations are expected to begin in Summer 2026 and are anticipated to continue through 2027. The auxiliary lanes on I-35 are tentatively scheduled to begin construction in late 2026, with the Santa Fe corridor/interchange work tentatively scheduled to start in late 2027.
