Summary:
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) along with the Federal Highway Association (FHWA) have awarded the City of Olathe a grant through the Safe Street and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program. This program is in place to provide funds to develop, complete, or supplement a comprehensive safety action plan. The goal of a Safety Action Plan is to develop a holistic, well-defined strategy to prevent roadway fatalities and serious injuries in a locality.
This project will include the development of a comprehensive Safety Action Plan for the City of Olathe. This plan will act as a method to prioritize safety improvements and justify investment decisions. Having an adopted plan will also increasing access to federal and state grant funding opportunities.
On October 23, 2023, the City advertised a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for engineering firms to provide services for the project. Two (2) firms responded to the RFQ. After reviewing all proposals, the selection committee chose WSP USA Inc. as the most qualified firm.
The agreement is for $349,957.53 and will include data gathering and analysis of the safety of Olathe’s roadways for multimodal transportation alternatives and develop a holistic, well-defined strategy to prevent roadway fatalities and serious injuries in the City of Olathe. Analysis of the sidewalk and trails systems, as well as ADA compliance on existing and proposed infrastructure shall be a focus as well. Included in the scope will be a focus on equity and disadvantaged users by improving walking and biking access for individuals.
This project is scheduled to begin after the approval of this agreement, with completion by the end of 2024.
