Summary:
The Solid Waste Division offers residents the option to have their large, bulky household items, large bulky brush items, appliances (CFC and non-CFC), tires and storm debris (when the need arises) to be collected curbside. Since 2015, the City has experienced a 35% increase in scheduled bulk item pick-ups each year. The City currently has three bulk item collection trucks that collect an average of 1420 bulk pick-ups per month. This number does not include the additional collection of debris from the recent large-scale storm events. The annual increase in pick-ups has caused our drivers to work consecutive 10-12-hour days each week, which results in additional overtime and equipment wear and tear. Adding a bulk collection truck to the fleet will allow additional resources to be dedicated to the bulk collection program, reduce equipment downtime, and maintain the service levels that our customers have come to expect.
In 2017, the City purchased an all-weather cab collection truck from Downing Sales and Service, Inc. as the result of a competitive bidding process. This all-weather cab truck allows the operator to work from inside the cab, which ensures the safety of the driver and better productivity in inclement weather. Downing has submitted a bid for an identical vehicle that is in stock and immediately available.
Staff recommends award of contract to Downing Sales and Service, Inc.
