Summary:
This project will extend Mahaffie Circle from its existing terminus north of 151st Street to the intersection of Old 56 Highway and Church Street. Improvements include extending the bridge over the railroad on I-35, pavement, curb and gutter, storm sewer, streetlights, and sidewalks.
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) bid the I-35 bridge work associated with the Mahaffie Circle Improvements Project earlier this year, and awarded the project to Pyramid Contractors, Inc. (Pyramid). Pyramid proposed changes to the design and plan details for the bridge improvements that would reduce the closure of the lanes of traffic on I-35 from two construction seasons to one construction season (2019). However, the proposed modifications required the design engineer, HNTB Corporation (HNTB), to modify the design of Bridge Pier No. 5 and recalculate the new loads to ensure that the proposal would work. The cost for this additional work is $40,367.
KDOT agreed to pay for the additional engineering costs. The contract for the design of the I-35 bridge work was included in the overall design contract for the Mahaffie Circle Improvements Project and was between the City of Olathe and HNTB. As such, the original funding agreement between KDOT and the City of Olathe was modified via this Supplemental Agreement No. 1, which allows the City of Olathe to be reimbursed for the additional $40,367 in charges from HNTB.
Construction of the I-35 bridge work associated with the Mahaffie Circle Improvements Project is underway with completion on I-35 expected by the end of the year. The extension of Mahaffie Circle is scheduled be completed by end of 2020.
