Summary:
This project will extend Mahaffie Circle from its existing terminus north of 151st Street to the intersection of Old 56 Highway and Church Street. Improvements include extending the bridge over the railroad on I-35, pavement, curb and gutter, storm sewer, streetlights, and sidewalks. A new 12” waterline is also being installed along the new roadway to enhance water pressure issues on the east side of I-35.
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) bid the I-35 bridge work associated with the Mahaffie Circle Improvements Project earlier this year, and awarded the low bid to Pyramid Contractors, Inc. (Pyramid). Because Pyramid is currently working on the bridge, including the excavation below where the roadway will go, they are in a unique position to begin work on the roadway portion of the project earlier than another contractor would be able to. As such, they can complete the project and open the new road at least 4 months earlier than scheduled. Additionally, the proposed contract with Pyramid will result in a savings to Olathe of $200,000 (3.4%) from the engineer’s estimate. Below is a comparison of the bid and the engineer’s estimate:

If the contract with Pyramid is approved, construction will start in October 2019 with completion no later than August 31, 2020. Liquidated damages of $2,500 per day have been included in the contract.
