Summary:

Since 2014, the Olathe Fire Department’s Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program has been connecting community members in need with the right care at the right time. In 2015, the City entered into a professional services agreement with Health Partnership Clinic (the only federally-qualified health center in Olathe) to provide a nurse practitioner for the MIH program. This allowed for strong coordination between the MIH units in the field with the clinic where many patients will receive services. The nurse practitioner is teamed with a firefighter/paramedic to perform medical assessments, determine needs and barriers to care, and help connect the patients with the appropriate care solutions in the community.

The MIH program has been successful in helping residents manage their health, creating a wider support network, and encouraging more active relationships with their doctors and other health providers. The program also helps ensure more appropriate use of the 9-1-1 system by reducing non-emergent calls for service and matching City resources to the patients’ problems leaving critical fire resources available for emergencies.

The MIH program leverages strong community partnerships. Olathe Medical Center, Inc. plans to continue to make annual charitable donations to the City through 2023 in support of the MIH Program. This funding fully funds the nurse practitioner position. The City’s payments under the agreement are contingent on receiving sufficient charitable funds to cover the cost of the services.

Staff recommends this annual agreement, with the opportunity for three (3) additional one-year renewals, which could last through December 31, 2023.
