Summary:

The City performs an inspection, condition rating, and scour screening of 113 City-maintained bridges with spans of 20 feet and greater every other year as required by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). In 2019, this inspection was performed, and 25 bridges were identified for maintenance. This annual project includes maintenance of these bridges based on the priority ranking identified in the 2019 Biennial Bridge Inspection report.  Additionally, this project will allow for the necessary maintenance of bridges with spans of less than 20 feet and City-owned retaining walls.

In 2021, maintenance will focus on a retaining wall along 135th Street between Brougham and Arapahoe, and on a bridge on Pflumm Road north of 143rd Street, which is a joint project with Overland Park.

The estimated cost for this project is $250,000 and the list of bridges, retaining walls, and culverts to be maintained is subject to change depending upon the actual cost of maintenance.  Costs may include design, surveys, staff time, inspection services, and construction.  Maintenance may include filling voids, repairing approach slabs and sidewalks, patching spalled areas, painting steel girders, repairing reinforced concrete boxes, replacing relief joints, replacing expansion devices, repairing and/or replacing guardrails and fencing, adding polymer overlays to the bridge decks, placing riprap, repairing and/or replacing retaining walls, and repairing and/or replacing culverts.
