Summary:
In 2019, a facility plan for the replacement of the City’s vertical well field was developed which identified new vertical well locations, provided a prioritized replacement schedule, and created a standard well construction design to be utilized for each replacement well site.
Design of the first phase of vertical well replacements was completed in 2020, which includes five new vertical wells and extensive upgrades to the energy distribution and backup power supply in the well field. Currently all vertical wells have their own dedicated overhead electric distribution lines providing power, with only Horizontal Collector Well (HCW-2) on emergency generator power. With this project, HCW-2 will become the centralized power hub for the entire well field. Power to the new vertical wells will be provided via buried duct banks from HCW-2. Not only will these lines be better protected from the elements, but they will also provide the new vertical wells with access to emergency power from the backup generator at HCW-2, increasing the City’s ability to still provide raw water to Water Treatment Plant #2 in case of an emergency.
This agreement is in place to reimburse Evergy Kansas Central, Inc. (Evergy) for deenergizing and removing portions of their overhead distribution lines in the southern half of the vertical well field which are to be abandoned with this project, as well as installing new overhead distribution power directly to HCW-2. The total cost of the reimbursement is $57,088.88.
Construction of Phase 1 of the Vertical Well Field Improvements Project is currently underway and is tentatively scheduled to be completed in Summer 2021.
