Summary:
The Santa Fe corridor is currently congested, impacting the east-west travel times throughout the city. The interchange is also a critical component of the City’s transportation network, which is also congested and causes traffic to back up onto I-35. The interchange currently has a crash rate that is approximately 6 times the national average.
A Request for Qualifications to evaluate various options to expand Santa Fe to increase capacity and improve safety was issued on February 20, 2019. Five (5) firms responded to this request, and HNTB Corporation (HNTB) was selected based on the submitted qualifications. A Professional Services Agreement with HNTB was approved by City Council on June 4, 2019 and included traffic analysis, geometric evaluations, public involvement, and economic analyses.
On January 19, 2021, the alternative options developed by HNTB to improve the Santa Fe corridor and interchange were presented to Council, and Staff was directed to move forward with the next steps in the project.
This Supplemental Agreement will extend HNTB’s contract to include preliminary engineering, a detailed analysis of costs associated with the project, and all other items needed to place the City in a position to compete for federal funding for the project. The total cost for this Supplemental Agreement is $2,147,860.
Staff will return to Council, in the future, with another Supplemental Agreement for further design once final scope and analysis are complete.
