Summary:
This project improves Lone Elm Road to a four-lane divided arterial section between Old 56 Highway and 151st Street along with geometric improvements at the intersection of Lone Elm Road and Old 56 Highway. Improvements will include storm sewer, streetlights, on-street bike lanes, landscaping and sidewalks. Also included in this project are modifications to the existing bridge over the railroad to provide pedestrian access.
Improvements to the intersection of Old 56 Highway and Lone Elm Road include continuous flow (also commonly referred to by other transportation agencies as ‘displaced’) left-turn lanes eastbound and westbound from Old 56 Highway to Lone Elm Road. The intersection is tentatively scheduled to open to traffic (weather dependent) on June 1, 2021. These will be the first continuous flow turn lanes and intersection of this type in the state of Kansas. So staff worked with the design engineer, HDR Engineering, to develop a video on how to navigate the intersection to assist with public education on how to navigate the new improvements.
